These are the pictures which prove people were not seeing things when a herd of bison charged past traffic in part of New Hampshire.

Police in Gilford posted images of the escaped animals asking: “The Wild West? No, it’s the Route 3 and 11 Bypass.”

Staci Schoenrock, writing on Facebook, said: “I was on the bypass and they were running down the on ramp, converging. Took me a couple seconds to realize that this was NOT traffic I wanted to “merge” with! Fortunately, they obeyed the “Yield” Sign.”

Gilford Police Department were advising people to drive safely as the herd was rounded up. Electronic road signs were updated telling motorists not to sound their horns or drive too close.

He told the Concord Monitor: “They don’t like the heat, so around 9.30-10 (a.m.) they usually go down to the woods and lay down for the day. Today, I guess they decided to do something different.”

The police were praised for their part in the round-up. All the animals were back on the farm by 7pm.
