A computer fault ground Melbourne’s train system to a halt during rush hour, causing commuters to vent their frustration online.

Commuters crowded into stations around the city as they waited for the trains to begin running, using the hashtag #metrofail to talk about their woes.

One particular Twitter user kept a record of his carriage forming its own society in the packed conditions of a train he was on.

Patrick even hopped on the latest meme trend to illustrate goings-on in the packed carriage.

So what other steps did the new citizens of carriage-ville take to from their new society?

Then, all of a sudden, there was a power vacuum.

It was a pretty fun way to pass the time, and a lesson in anthropology.

The train service eventually reached full operational capacity at around 10pm.
