A 67-year-old man accused of murdering a plumber as he repaired his boiler is due to stand trial next year.

William Treadwell allegedly set upon 63-year-old Gary Amer “out of the blue”, the Old Bailey heard.

In the days before, the victim had been to fix the boiler at the home Treadwell shared with his sister in Madron Street, Walworth, south-east London.

On August 17, it is claimed Treadwell bludgeoned Mr Amer from behind as he was busy making the repairs.

He allegedly went on to inflict 30 stab wounds, including seven to the heart, as Mr Amer was on the ground, leaving two kitchen knives lodged in his body.

Treadwell appeared in court via video link from Thameside prison wearing a bright orange vest top over a green T-shirt.

Judge Sarah Munro QC set a provisional seven-day trial for February 4 2019 and a plea hearing on November 7.

The defendant confirmed his identity and said “thank you very much” after the judge concluded the hearing.

Grey-bearded Treadwell was then remanded into custody.
