What the papers say

A variety of stories make the front pages on Friday – from a Brexit warning by Airbus to the impending Heathrow expansion vote.

The Times reports that aerospace company Airbus is on the brink of becoming the first big manufacturer to pull investment from Britain in the wake of Theresa May’s stalled Brexit negotiations.

The paper says the firm is looking to move production to China, the US or elsewhere in Europe because of worries that EU safety certifications will not apply from March next year and uncertainty over customs checks.

The Prime Minister is also under pressure over the looming Heathrow expansion vote, The Guardian says, with international trade minister Greg Hands stepping down in protest at the Government’s plans.

His announcement also increased pressure on Boris Johnson, another critic of the proposals, to stand by his principles and vote against the plans, the paper adds.

Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph reports on comments by the US ambassador that Britain needs to shed its “defeatist attitude” on Brexit and take inspiration from Donald Trump in negotiations.

And the i leads on revelations that the House of Commons spent more than £2.4 million on non-disclosure agreements with employees over the last five years.

The Daily Mail reports that nearly four million EU migrants will be allowed to stay permanently in the UK after Brexit, while the Metro says it will cost just £65 and three questions to live here.

Elsewhere, both The Sun and the Daily Star lead on the death of former Love Island contestant Sophie Gradon.

The Daily Mirror carries an interview with the daughter of a nurse who tried to expose the Gosport War Memorial Hospital scandal.

And the Financial Times reports that the Bank of England’s chief economist voted to raise interest rates, stoking expectations of an increase in August.
