A US professor suspected of stabbing a 26-year-old Chicago man to death is due in a California courtroom on Monday.

Wyndham Lathem and Oxford University financial officer, Andrew Warren, were wanted on first-degree murder charges for the death of Trenton James Cornell-Duranleau.

His body was found on July 27 in an apartment in central Chicago.

Lathem and Warren were fugitives for more than a week before separately turning themselves in to California authorities.

Lathem, 42, a Northwestern University microbiologist, is being held without bail in Alameda County. His court appearance on Monday is in the city of Pleasanton.

One of his lawyers, Barry Sheppard, says he expects his client to waive extradition. He also urged the public to wait until all the facts of the case come out before making judgments.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi the victim and Lathem had been in a “personal relationship” and detectives believe the attack was domestically-motivated, but their connection to Warren is less clear.

Warren was dealing with “personal hardships”, had been reported missing from the UK days before the attack and was not on Oxford business, he said.
