Road near Newport could be closed all month after pipe collapse

A busy road near Newport could stay shut for the rest of the month after it caved into an historic pipe.

The road is closed

Councillor Eric Carter, who represents Newport South and East on Telford & Wrekin Council, said he had been told the closure of the road near Greenvale, Church Aston, could last until the end of October, if not longer.

The time the work will take depends on how difficult the road is to repair. It collapsed earlier this month after an old 150 to 200-year-old water pipe caved in beneath it.

Councillor Carter said people who use buses were most effected by the closure.

"It's an issue that's causing problems," he said.

"The number 5 bus goes to Telford, and people who are elderly or infirm are struggling to get the bus when it's not going through Church Aston."

He said he had suggested a number of temporary stops and hoped to hear an answer in the coming days.

Investigations into the hole, which was not on any records for the area, are on-going.
