Arriva Trains Wales was left apologising to passengers when the company was forced to halt all trains between Shrewsbury and Welshpool.

Signal technicians discovered the damage and engineers were called in to carry out an emergency replacement of the cables.

The company said it expected the delays to last for around and hour-and-a-half from 3.45pm.

A spokesman for the firm said: "Signalling technicians have found that rats have gnawed through cabling in the Welshpool area which they're currently replacing.

"Unfortunately trains are not able to operate between Welshpool and Shrewsbury until the cable is replaced."
