As councils struggle to keep up with repairs, it is motorists facing the cost of repairs, not to mention the danger of negotiating the craters. In Telford, workmen are being told to concentrate on repairs to main roads, leaving side roads in a sorry state.

Meanwhile, one disgruntled homeowner has hit out at Shropshire Council for failing to repair a pothole directly outside his home.

David Martin, who lives on the A41, between Whitchurch and Market Drayton, said his whole house "shakes" when lorries drive through it in the early hours of the morning – abruptly waking him and his wife up during the night.
