Resident Bill Higgins is demanding action over Hollies Road which he says needs urgent repairs carried out to it

Retired Bill Higgins, of Atlas Grove in Wellington, wants Telford & Wrekin council to carry out work on nearby Hollies Road.

The 64-year-old says he has been waiting for more than a year for work to be done on the roads and footpaths after handing in a petition with 200 signatures to the council.

But despite having “gone down all the necessary routes” – he claims a “shabby repair job” is all that’s been done.

“There have been surveyors out today who said it’s going to have to be resurfaced next September, which I wasn’t very pleased with,” said Mr Higgins.

“We’ve waited 18 months now, the road is just falling to pieces. It’s just an absolute mess. The bit of the road by the bridge is the worst.

“The roads are very uneven like a trench, it’s because it’s been patched up. They’ve done some repairs and everything has sunk now. It’s all very uneven.”

With the help of his daughter and granddaughter, Mr Higgins launched the petition around 12 months ago.

He has been in regular contact with Telford & Wrekin Council as well as local MP Mark Pritchard.

He added: “We did a petition with nearly 200 names. That was about 12 months ago, it was quite a way back.

“I was promised something would be done about it but nothing has been done. I’ve got the MP involved and I’ve been to the council. I’ve gone down all the proper routes trying to get something done but all we’ve had is a poor shabby repair job.”

The whole road is falling to pieces. It’s only going to get worse.

“All you’ve got to do is look at it and see how bad it is. We realize that Hollies Road is not a main A road but it is a much used local road which deserves urgent attention.

“We know that locals living here are mainly council tenants but we do pay our council taxes and vehicle taxes, which enttles us to have good roads and good footpaths, like everybody else.”

Mr Higgins added that a new housing which could be built on the site of Orleton Park and former Orleton Lane Infant and Nursery School in Orleton Lane would make the current problems worse.

Telford & Wrekin Council was unavailable for comment.
