One and a half mile stretch of A41 to close for five days

Motorists are set for a week of disruption when a major road closes in both directions.

A one and a half mile stretch of the A41 will be shut off south of Newport from Monday to Friday next week.

The closure is to allow for resurfacing work to take place and Telford & Wrekin Council says it is no easier to do the work at night.

Traffic will be managed with a road closure from Pave Lane and Stockton Lane to the B4379 Sheriffhales junction.

A full diversion will be put in around the works and this will be in place around the clock during the road closure.

Angie Astley, Telford & Wrekin Council's assistant director for neighbourhood and customer service, said: “Working at night through this section was initially considered. However a combination of safety issues and the potential impact on nearby residents caused by noise from the scheme mean that it will be quicker and safer to complete the work during an extended daytime closure.

“We have deliberately delayed these works until the summer holidays and we are committed to doing other works at the same time including gully cleansing, sign repairs and carriageway repairs.

“We know that this is a heavily used road and that these essential works will cause disruption and inconvenience and we would like to apologise in advance for that.”

The road closure permit is in place for two weeks but the works are not expected to take more than one week to be completed. However, they are weather dependent.

Council bosses say the repairs in Telford are being carried out as part of ongoing work to make the borough a safer and better maintained place, and is positive news for residents.

Work will also take place on Haybridge Road, from the fire station to Watling Street from Monday to August 4 – it will also be closed 24 hours a day. The Wrockwardine Wood Way to Wombridge Road junction will close from July 31 to August 4, with work to take place between 7.30am and 5.30am. Kemberton Road westbound will be entirely closed from August 7 to August 11.

Horsehay Roundabout will see work from August 14 to 25, with Bridge Road also to be closed during working hours from 7.30am to 5.30pm.

Castlefields Way will be closed 24 hours a day from August 7 to 25 and Holyhead Road, from Haygate Road to Roman Road B5061, will close from August 29 to September 15 in the day. All the work, which starts on Monday, will be weather dependent – meaning dates may be subject to change.

Telford & Wrekin Council says it has decided to carry out the majority of the programme during the summer holidays to reduce the impact on road users as much as possible.

Funding for the work has come from the council’s highways capital fund as part of its Pride In Our Community programme.
