Peter Morris, from Peter Morris Cars, says the changing nature of shopping means it no longer needs such a large space for its business.

Plans had been put forward for 14 homes on the site of the garage in Wellington, which would see it demolished and replaced with the new homes.

The plans were approved by Telford & Wrekin Council's planning committee at its meeting at the Whitehouse Hotel in Wellington on Wednesday.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Morris said: "Basically, it was the correct thing to do.

"We've been using the site for 25 years but it was time to review the situation.

"Lots of car sales are no done over the internet, so much of our business can be done online. We're also focussing more on the service and MOT side of the business so we're going to try and find a premises that will work better for us.

"Hopefully we're not going to cease to be around. This site is just too big for us now, we can operate over the internet and we would be able to do that from a unit.

"The main thing is that we'd like to thank those loyal customers who have supported us for 25 years and keep that customer base up. That is very important to us and the team

"The high street is suffering now and we can be said to be on the high street.

"It is good news that Telford & Wrekin has supported the application."

The two and three storey homes would be served by 21 car parking spaces off a shared surface with landscaped amenity areas.

Initial proposals show that the houses would be of twelve two-bed units and two three-bed unit.

In a design and access statement, submitted along with the plans, it says that the street is a key access into the town and any development would seek to make the most of Wellington's historic character.
