215-home housing estate planned for land on edge of Ludlow

A tranche of land on the edge of Ludlow has been put on the market for housing, with the potential for 215 homes.

The 26 acres off Bromfield Road on the outskirts of Ludlow were the subject of a planning wrangle, after permission for a housing estate at the site was twice refused by Shropshire Council's south planning committee. However, it was then granted on appeal to the national planning inspector by developers Tesni at the end of 2015.

In November last year Tesni agreed to drop plans for a controversial footbridge connecting the quiet edge-of-town Ludlow street, Fishmore View, with the planned new estate of 215 homes, despite the bridge having the backing of the planning inspector. Now the whole section of land, between Bromfield Road and the A49 bypass to the north of Ludlow, has gone on the market for an undisclosed price – complete with the planning consent for the 215 homes, and the possibility of a footbridge, once again.

At the time the approval was granted in 2015, local Ludlow Councillor Andy Boddington expressed his anger at the decision.

He said: "I am furious with the inspector's decision, even though I have said that I am not against the principle of development of this site. I am furious that a vehemently-opposed footbridge connecting the development to Fishmore View has been approved. And I am furious because the decision blows apart our local plan, known as SAMDev."

James Evans, from Halls Commercial, described the land as one of the best development opportunities in Ludlow. He said: "The asking prices will be divulged to interested parties on application to joint agents are Halls Commercial based in Shrewsbury and John Amos & Company in Leominster. This site arguably offers the most prime remaining residential development opportunity in Ludlow."

The planning consent secured for the site allows for the homes, a commercial building or neighbourhood store. It also gives permission for a public open space, access roads and junctions, pedestrian footbridges and associated engineering works.
