Miller Homes is seeking for permission to build 159 homes on land at Weeping Cross, to the south of Oteley Road and west of the A458.

Under plans lodged with Shropshire Council's planning department, the nationwide building firm is planning to build the two, three and four bedroomed houses on the land which is currently used for farming. Approximately 15 per cent of the development will be for affordable housing.

In a design and access statement, the housing firm said: "The application seeks detailed planning permission for a residential development of 159 dwellings including parking, open space, landscaping, internal road layouts and associated infrastructure.

"Miller Homes has engaged with the planning and open officers at Shropshire Council. A number of meetings were held between Miller Homes and the council to discuss the detail of the proposed development.

"The house types for Weeping Cross have been carefully designed to respond to the context of Shrewsbury and provide a contemporary development within Shrewsbury South Sustainable Urban Extension. The homes are traditional in appearance, with a variety of predominantly brick build facades.

"The development is composed of a number of terraced, semi-detached and detached properties. The maximum storey height across the development is two storeys, with garages limited to one storey.

"There will be a variety of building types, which have variety in width, eaves and ridges provide further interest to the street scene. Corner turning units provide a sense of definition along the south eastern edge of the site.

"A public open space sits at the heart of the proposal, helping create a sense of arrival and improving legibility within the development. Proposed buildings front onto and overlook this space as well as framing the pedestrian route which connects to the north, onto Oteley Road.

" The site offers a great opportunity to deliver a new residential community and family homes to meet local demands and the housing needs in the area."

The plans will go before members of the council's planning committee at a date to be set.
