Mr Corbyn arrived at Southwater Lake opposite Telford Ice Rink shortly after 4pm.

He told a large crowd: "I was determined to get to Telford at some point during this election campaign.

"This is where I grew up. This is where I learned the value of communities coming together to achieve something goods and better in our society."

Referencing the row over the future of A&E in Shropshire, he said: "It's about bringing Shrewsbury and Telford together.

He said the NHS had been "affected by cuts, it's been affected by privatisation, it's been affected by rationing".

"I want to say thank you to all those who work in our NHS. We will ensure the NHS is properly funded and suspend the Sustainability and Transformation Plans to look at all those issues again."

Mr Corbyn had been due to visit Telford last month but cancelled the appearance in the wake of the Manchester attack which killed 22 people.

On a recent visit to the Shropshire Star offices in Ketley, Mr Corbyn admitted that the Telford seat is being targeted for a Labour gain in this month's election.

The Labour party sees Telford as a key seat after the Tories' Lucy Allan ended Labour's David Wright's 14-year reign as MP for the constituency in 2015.
