Dr Laura Davies, who is challenging incumbent Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski for the Shrewsbury and Atcham constituency seat for the second time, has pledged to put heathcare at the heart of her campaign over the next few weeks, following an official launch at the Lord Hill Hotel on Friday.

She said: “The NHS is the top priority for many voters, 2017 is an election like no other and the very future of the NHS is at stake.

"The disastrous £3 billion pound reorganisation and continued cuts in funding by the Tory government means the NHS is in real danger if Theresa May gets into Downing Street again.”

She said in Shrewsbury the party increased its share of the vote in 2015, when she also stood, and she was hoping to build on that this time around.

She said: “This election is an unexpected opportunity for voters here in Shrewsbury to change their futures.

"I have met so many people since the election was announced who recognise the damage the Tories are doing and now have the chance to vote for a party, and a candidate, who really will put them first."

Councillor Alan Mosley, chair of Shrewsbury and Atcham Labour Party, said: “We’ve got over 1,000 members here and, following on from a very successful local government campaign, we’re working every day to get Labour’s message out to voters across the constituency.

"We’re all delighted Laura is our candidate once again, and we’re enjoying a positive and effective campaign with great feedback from voters.”

John Spellar, MP for Warley and former Minister of State for Northern Ireland, was guest speaker at the campaign launch.

He said: “The 7.3 per cent swing to Labour in 2015 shows what an impact Laura and the Labour team have had in Shrewsbury and Atcham.

"As a doctor and a former Army officer Laura has real-life experience which will make her the excellent MP that Shrewsbury deserves.”
