A supported employment scheme plan was unveiled at Telford &Wrekin Council's cabinet.

The scheme will deliver work placements for young people and adults returning to work, three ring-fenced apprenticeships for care leavers, up to five paid employment placements for adults with learning disabilities and up to five supported internships for young people with education, health and care plans.

The pilot will now run until the end of the financial year, and its assessment will be taken back to the cabinet.

Councillor Rae Evans, cabinet member for customer services, tourism and partnerships presented the report and said: "There is clear evidence that with the right support individuals from each group can be successful and fulfil their full potential.

"We believe we can offer direct help for them to take the first steps in doing so.

Monitored

"It will help to build self confidence and the skills required for future employment, and it will be monitored by a working group.

"It will also help the council achieve a wider objective for people to become independent and reduce the reliance and demand on services."

The report adds that work experience placements and internships are not paid and won't incur direct costs, with placements for adults with learning disabilities being funded from the service's base budget.

The annual cost of three apprentice posts for three care leavers will be £40,000.

Deputy leader Richard Overton added: "This is excellent work, I've always believed in aspiration and this unlocks potential for people who think they have no worth, and we need to make sure they do not feel held back.

"Employment gives people better options and makes them feel worth and valued and the benefits of this scheme are really good."
