The Labour politician won the East Ward on St George's and Priorslee Parish Council in a by-election on Thursday evening.

The 51-year-old said he was now looking forward to representing people on local issues.

He said: "I would like to thank the voters in St Georges, it is nice to get back into the parish council and to get back into grass roots politics."

Mr Wright said he would be getting his teeth into the issues raised on the campaign trail.

He said: "I think during the campaign people were raising issues about regeneration in St Georges generally, car parking and community facilities, and I wanted to get involved in the parish to look at those kind of issues.

"I think people are keen to see St George's thriving and want to see the Gower brought back to life if possible and make sure there are activities for all generations.

"It is already a strong community and I would like to make a contribution."

Mr Wright's election brings his political career full-circle having started as a parish councillor in Oakengates when he was in his 20s.

The former labour MP, who lost his seat to Lucy Allan in 2015, also insisted he has no plans to try to return to parliament.

He said: "This is not about a platform to go back to Westminster. It is not about that, it is about serving the community."
