Dr Davies, will run against Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski for a third time, after missing out in 2015 and 2017.

She claimed Labour had made significant gains in the last elections, and this time she is "in it to win it".

Despite no planned election until 2022, Dr Davies said she will begin campaigning as soon as possible, so the party is ready if another election is called.

She said: "I’m thrilled to have been chosen by local Labour members here to be the parliamentary candidate and I’m honoured to have the opportunity to represent Shrewsbury & Atcham in the House of Commons.

“Shropshire has been hit hard by the Theresa May and the Tories. Incomes and living standards have fallen, our NHS is in crisis, police numbers have been cut and crime is rising.

"We just don't know when the next election will be, there isn't one planned until 2022, however if a snap election is called we will be ready.

"I will be campaigning straight away, not just ahead of the election

"Daniel Kawczynski has been failing the people Shrewsbury, and I am committed to change that and we will be ready when the time comes."

Mr Kawczynski was elected in 2005, however his majority has been cut in the last two elections.

His majority was reduced by almost 3,000 at the last election, and Dr Davies is determined to reduce it even further and make Shrewsbury red again for the first time since 2005.

She added: "The polls across the country are showing that people in the UK are shifting to Labour due to Tory policies, and I can't see why that can't happen in Shropshire."

Alan Mosley, chair of Shrewsbury and Atcham constituency Labour party and leader of Shrewsbury Town Council said: "I’m delighted that Laura is once again standing. She’ll be the committed and hardworking MP that Shrewsbury deserves.

"In the last two years Labour’s vote has doubled. People are ready for change."
