Jaguar I-Pace cleans up at World Car Awards

British EV takes trio of awards at annual ceremony

Jaguar has wiped the floor with the competition at this year’s World Car Awards with its I-Pace.

The British electric vehicle collected a hat-trick of awards at the annual ceremony — including the top gong of World Car of the Year 2019.

Beating out the likes of the Audi e-tron and new Volvo S60/V60, it’s the second time a Jaguar product has won the award — after the F-Pace SUV was crowned champion in 2017. Judges commended the I-Pace for its state-of-the-art powertrain and its ability to attract new customers to the brand.

Alongside top honours, the I-Pace received the award for World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year.

Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover chief executive, said: “It is an honour that the Jaguar I-Pace has received such an accolade from the prestigious World Car jurors. We started with an ideal, to move towards our Destination Zero vision; zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion. I-Pace is our first step to achieving this, and it was conceived when EVs were little more than a niche choice.

“So, we started from a clean sheet of paper to create a new benchmark – the world’s best premium electric vehicle, and a true Jaguar driver’s car. For I-Pace to be awarded 2019 World Car of the Year gives our first all-electric vehicle the ultimate recognition it deserves. I would like to thank the team who have created I-Pace for their passion in making it so outstanding.”

Other winners at this year’s awards included the Suzuki Jimny, taking World Urban Car, the Audi A7 with World Luxury Car and McLaren’s 720S — named World Performance Car.
