Deliveries of the new S60 are expected to commence in May

Volvo has commenced sales of its new S60, with prices for the mid-sized saloon starting at £37,920.

The third-generation S60 is the first Volvo to be built in America, and comes to the UK exclusively in high-specification R-Design Edition trim to begin with.

R-Design Edition brings lowered sports suspension to the S60, along with 19-inch diamond cut alloy wheels. Inside, heated front sports seats have been fitted, as well as a heated steering wheel and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

It also benefits from a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors and a heads-up display for the driver.

The S60 will initially be available with just one powertrain – Volvo’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine badged ‘T5’. It delivers 247bhp and 350Nm of torque to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The Swedish firm claims that the engine will power the S60 from 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds while delivering up to 39.8mpg. CO2 emissions, meanwhile, are a claimed 152g/km.

Jon Wakefield, Volvo Car UK Managing Director, said: “The success of our mid-size vehicles, the multi-award-winning new V60 estate and XC60 SUV, has created an ideal platform on which to introduce the new S60. Focusing on our brand strengths of design, technology and safety, we are confident the S60 has the potential to perform strongly in what is traditionally a very competitive market segment.”

The S60 is on sale now, and first deliveries are expected to commence in May of this year.

Soon after, Volvo is planning to add further equipment levels and engine options. These will include an all-wheel-drive hybrid – though the S60 won’t be offered with a diesel powertrain, becoming the first Volvo to entirely ditch the fuel.
