The new R1250 models bring more power and technology

BMW has unveiled its R1250 GS and R1250 RT motorcycles, showcasing the bikes’ uprated technology and engine advancements.

Both bikes, which will replace the R1200, use the same 1254cc engine pushing out 134bhp. However, the biggest reveal here is BMW’s new ShiftCam technology.

Using a shift gate to move the camshaft sideways in the head, the system can change between two cam profiles depending on the position of the throttle.

In short, the technology allows for an additional power increase across the engine’s range, along with lower emissions and fuel consumption. Overall running smoothness is also improved, as is general refinement.

The bikes benefit from two selectable riding modes – Dynamic and Enduro – as well as automatic stability control and hill start control as standard.

An optional Riding Modes Pro system is available, which adds two modes to the GS – Dynamic Pro and Enduro Pro. These allow the rider to tailor the bike’s settings to their individual liking or the environment in which they are using the motorcycle.

Both motorbikes get LED daytime running lights as standard, while the GS benefits from a full LED headlamp.

The more touring-focused R1250 RT features the same basic equipment as the GS and is available in one basic colour – although special finishes are available as an optional extra.

BMW has yet to announce full pricing for the R1250 GS and RT models.
