Singer Vehicle Design unveils latest reimagined Porsche 911

Incredible creation revealed at Goodwood Festival of Speed

Singer Vehicle Design has unveiled its latest take on the Porsche 911 at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

As part of a collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering, the catchily named ‘Dynamics and Lightweighting Study’ (DLS) is actually a stunning reimagining of a period 1990 Porsche 964.

The car now has a new 4.0-litre air-cooled engine that produces a remarkable 500bhp at a heady 9,000rpm. Singer consulted Hans Mezger, designer of the original engine, to advise on the new unit, and under his watchful eye it has undergone a significant weight loss. Use of magnesium and titanium in the engine and carbon fibre across the car has given it a kerb weight of just 990kg.

Williams gave the car a full aerodynamic makeover using its F1 know-how, and the result is both visually stunning and aerodynamically improved. The car’s redesigned front end eliminates lift at speed, there’s an iconic ducktail spoiler, and the addition of channels on the roof actually helps it generate genuine downforce at speed.

Under the skin, very little of the original car remains, and Williams has given the suspension a full overhaul. There’s even Bosch ABS and ESC – not items you’d find on the original car – as well as Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes behind forged magnesium wheels in the style of the original Fuchs alloys.

Not even the interior has remained unscathed, although the makeover in there is certainly for the better. There are carbon-fibre Recaro sports seats, a Momo steering wheel and a newly repositioned gear shifter. It’s had its visible mechanism remade in titanium and magnesium, and been raised closer to the steering wheel for swifter shifts.

The Singer DLS is the result of a commission by client Scott Blattner. He originally approached Singer with the brief of improving his 964, and the project expanded from there. Singer and Williams will apply these upgrades to a further 75 cars, with Singer and Williams’s contributions being added in California and Oxford respectively.

No pricing information has been revealed as each car is bespoke. Singer price tags begin at around £120,000, but from there the sky’s the limit depending on the client’s requirements.
