Peugeot pauses 308 GTi production to cut model’s emissions

The French manufacturer is halting production of its hot hatch to ensure it complies with tightening emissions regulations

Production of Peugeot’s 308 GTi performance hatchback is being paused for four months while the car is re-engineered to meet new emissions standards.

The new Euro 6.2 regulations, which take into account the latest testing methods designed to be truer to real-world driving, have forced the French manufacturer into tweaking the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine in the 308 GTi.

Peugeot is to add a petrol particulate filter that will reduce the number of fine soot particles emitted by the hot hatch and says the car’s 266bhp power output won’t be affected. Volkswagen has already applied a similar filter to all of its turbocharged models in the wake of the dieselgate scandal.

Volvo became the first manufacturer in the UK market to have a full range of cars compliant with the new regulations, which it announced yesterday.

The new Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) that is being introduced into emissions testing protocol from September sees a more authentic set of figures achieved by integrating realistic driving behaviour, higher speeds and longer distances into laboratory testing.

The aim of the new procedure is to ensure that the true emissions of cars are identified and regulated.
