Tesla’s Model 3 is set to receive all-wheel drive and performance-orientated versions, according to a string of tweets from company boss Elon Musk.

He confirmed that the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version would be capable of 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds and a 310-mile range retained from the standard Model 3.

In addition, he confirmed that the upcoming performance version would also retain the 310-mile range and that it would reach 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.

According to the chief executive, the performance Model 3 would be priced at $78,000 (circa £58,100), which would put it in line with performance saloons such as the BMW M3. The standard Model 3 is priced at $35,000 (circa £26,700).

However, Musk made the bold claim that the Model 3 would be 15 per cent quicker than the BMW M3, that it would have better handling than the famed German performance saloon, and that it could beat “anything in its class on track”.

Musk also detailed the dual-motor concept, saying: “Tesla dual motor means there is a motor in the front and a motor in the rear. One is optimised for power and one for range. The car drives fine even if a motor breaks down. It helps ensure you make it to your destination and don’t get stuck on the side of the road in potentially unsafe conditions.”

The Tesla Model 3 has been through what Musk has described as “production hell” since its launch last year. However, production figures are set to pass 5,000 cars per week in June, which marks a significant improvement for the electric car manufacturer.
