Billed as the most capable mid-sized SUV ever built, Jeep has unveiled its new 2019 Cherokee.

The newest instalment of the utility vehicle will reach the UK in October this year, the Press Association can reveal.

Unveiled at the North American International Motor Show in Detroit, features include a new “authentic and premium design” that highlights a completely fresh appearance and a major restyling of the vehicle.

The interior also receives an update with a redesigned and repositioned centre console, allowing for more storage space and mobile phone connectivity.

Jeep’s latest Uconnect systems are available, which include enhanced processing power, faster start-up times and a high-resolution touchscreen display. Consumers will have the choice of a seven- or 8.4-inch screen.

A new 2.0-litre direct injection turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine has also been announced to accompany the new Cherokee.

Jeep has not disclosed any further information about it, but did say the unit “enhances performance and fuel efficiency”.

Buyers will also be able to choose the current 3.2-litre Pentastar V6 engine, which pushes out 271bhp and 324Nm of torque, or the 2.4-litre PZEV Multiair2 Tigershark I-4 unit, with 181bhp and 231Nm.

Mike Manley, head of global brand, said: “A stunning, more premium design and the addition of our new fuel-efficient 2.0-litre turbo engine make the new 2019 Jeep Cherokee even more desirable in the mid-size SUV segment.

“In addition, Cherokee builds on its benchmark 4×4 capability and on-road dynamics with refinement and style, a host of new attributes, powertrains and the latest technology that is perfectly situated for consumers worldwide.”

The SUV has also been engineered with more than 80 safety and security features underpinned by a strong foundation constructed with 65 per cent high-strength steel.

Engineers then added both active and passive safety and security features, including ParkSense parallel park assist; adaptive cruise control-plus; forward collision warning-plus; LaneSense lane departure warning; blind-spot monitoring; rear cross path detection; ParkView rear back-up camera with dynamic grid lines and eight air bags as standard.
