Seat has revealed the most powerful car it has ever built – the Leon Cupra R.

This is the third time a Seat hot hatch has been given an R badge, and this time it signifies a 10bhp bump to 306bhp for the six-speed manual model – equal to that of the near-identical Volkswagen Golf R. The automatic DSG model remains at 296bhp.

Limited to just 799 units, the R has a new exhaust, modified front camber and updated adaptive suspension system, as well as Brembo brakes for better stopping power.

On the outside, there are carbon-fibre details on the aerodynamic parts, plus copper wing mirrors and alloy wheels. Meanwhile, redesigned air intakes and front wheel arches give a sportier look.

Inside, more carbon-fibre and copper have been used, and the steering wheel and gear stick have been upholstered in soft Alcantara. Despite the original Cupra R being famous for wearing a bright yellow paint job, this new-generation model is only available in three subdued shades: Midnight Black, Pyrenees Grey and Matte Grey.

The Seat Leon Cupra R will be available at the end of the year and will make its public debut at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show where more detailed information will be announced.

Seat also announced that the new compressed natural gas-powered Ibiza hatchback will go on display in Frankfurt. It says that is “strong proof” of its trust in the alternative fuel, which it claims emits 85 per cent less nitrogen oxide than diesel engines and 25 per cent less CO2 than petrol.
