Jaguar Land Rover reveals “steering wheel of the future”

JLR says “the steering wheel could become the only part of the car that you own”

Jaguar Land Rover has revealed a new steering wheel that is set to shake up the concept of car ownership.

The wheel – which uses connected technologies – is designed to be taken with drivers when they leave the car, and can be used in another vehicle when needed. JLR says that the future of “autonomous, connected and electric cars” would allow motorists to “call upon the vehicle of your choice where and when you need it”.

The British car manufacturer believes “the steering wheel could become the only part of the car that you own”.

Dubbed ‘Sayer’ after former Jaguar designer Malcolm Sayer, the connected wheel uses voice-activated artificial intelligence to help owners organise their day and plan ahead.

For example, JLR foresees a future where the wheel’s owner tells Sayer when they have a meeting, and it can plan what time they need to wake up in the morning, when a car needs to autonomously arrive to collect them, and even if there are fun sections of road they might want to drive themselves.

The Sayer wheel is being demonstrated to the public at the first Tech Fest, a Jaguar Land Rover event happening between Friday, September 8 and Sunday, September 10.

It is being hosted at the Central Saint Martins art, design and technology college in London and entry is free.
