Free motorcycle and scooter lessons will be available to those interested in learning how to ride over the August bank holiday weekend.

Get On, the motorbike industry’s free ‘try out’ programme, will be running 45-minute lessons at the British Motor Museum in Warwickshire.

Professional instructors will introduce participants to gears, brakes and slow-speed handling during the lessons. Motorcycles, scooters and protective clothing are all provided.

Karen Cole, director of safety and training for the Motorcycle Industry Association, said: “First and foremost motorcycling is fun, but it is vital that people get their first taste of riding in a safe and structured environment, where expectations about wearing protective clothing are set and people understand the value of finding high quality training.

“Government vehicle licensing figures show that more and more people are riding motorcycles and scooters each year and we want them to wear the right gear and take training with the best schools in the UK.

“So whether you are looking for a new hobby in retirement, or you are 16 years old and planning to get your first moped, Get On will get you started in the right way.”

The lessons are open to anyone aged 14 or over and can be booked by phoning 02476 408040 or visiting the website www.geton.co.uk. Those under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

According to the THINK! motorcycle safety campaign, injuries to bikers are out of proportion to their presence on the road. Although motorbike riders account for one per cent of total road traffic, they account for 19 per cent of all road deaths.
