Ford Fiesta and Focus are best sellers, with the Vauxhall Corsa a close third

The Ford Fiesta is the most popular used car in Britain, as figures show the market for second-hand cars declined in the second quarter of 2017.

Figures for April to June show that Ford’s popular supermini continues to reign over its competitors as the best-selling used car, with 83,222 examples changing hands.

It was also the best-selling used car in 2016, and in May it was beaten to the top of the best-selling new cars for the first time since 2014.

The rest of the top 10 remains largely unchanged from the first quarter results, with the Ford Focus (74,477) and Vauxhall Corsa (72,341) in second and third respectively. The only car to move up the list was the Mini hatchback, which went from ninth to seventh despite selling nearly 6,000 fewer examples at 32,914.

Lower sales was a common theme across the board, with even the Fiesta selling nearly 20,000 fewer than in the first quarter.

Data compiled by industry trade body the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that in the second quarter of 2017, used car sales were down 13.5 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, said: “With used car sales closely mirroring what we see in the new car market, last quarter’s decline comes as no surprise – and with demand easing over recent months, this could offer motorists the opportunity to get some great deals.”
