China’s largest vehicle exporter is planning to start selling cars in Europe, starting with a compact SUV.

Chery Automobile Co., it’s to be operated under a different nameplate in Europe, will reveal a pre-production version of this new SUV at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 12.

The Chinese manufacturer claims that the new SUV has been designed for “young, urban, progressive-minded customers” and that it will meet the “needs and expectations of European private and fleet buyers in terms of design, quality, dynamics and crash worthiness”.

Chery CEO Dr. Anning Chen said: “In just a few years we intend to start selling a family of vehicles in European markets across multiple segments, with power supplied by a range of electrified powertrains.

“Our brand will target open-minded, younger customers in particular, with a product rollout strategy that focuses on quality, low- and zero-emissions powertrains, and emotional engagement with customers.

“All Chery vehicles sold in Europe will feature class-leading connectivity, be fun to drive, offer flexible and spacious interiors and will provide comprehensive personalisation, all of which are aligned with our high standards of product quality and aftersales support.”

Chery was founded in a small garage 20 years ago by chairman Tongyue Yin, and has since grown to become China’s largest vehicle exporter – with more than 1.2 million units sold overseas since the company’s inception.

Last year saw the manufacturer produce over 700,000 units, roughly 100,000 of which were exported. This figure accounted for close to 30 per cent of all Chinese vehicle exports for 2016.
