Aston Martin has confirmed that construction of ‘Phase Two’ of its new St Athan production facility has begun.

Ammanford-based firm T Richard Jones Ltd (TRJ) was named as the construction partner for the build – the same company that worked on Phase One of the process.

The British luxury manufacturer is already working to convert the three ‘super hangars’ at the Welsh site into a new manufacturing facility.

Aston Martin president and CEO Andy Palmer said: “This is yet another step on our journey in Wales, with the facility now starting to take shape. TRJ have proven themselves during Phase One and we look forward to working with them over the course of this next phase of the project.”

Aston Martin announced in early 2016 that it had selected the south Wales site from 20 potential locations around the world to build its second construction facility.

Up to 750 new employees will work at the facility upon completion, and 40 have already been hired and are now working and training at Aston Martin’s Gaydon plant.

Welsh first minister Carwyn Jones said: “I am so pleased that Ammanford-based firm TRJ has been successful in winning the contract for the next phase of construction of Aston Martin’s manufacturing facility at St Athan. This is exactly the sort of outcome we had hoped for and I look forward to seeing more Welsh businesses benefitting in the coming months.”
