Aston Martin has confirmed it will be starting production on its first all-electric model.

The RapidE initially debuted almost two years ago as a concept and the Gaydon-based luxury manufacturer has confirmed a limited production model is set for 2019.

The appearance of the Rapide S is maintained, but the 6.0-litre V12 engine is replaced with an all-electric powertrain, details of which are set to be released in future.

Andy Palmer, president and CEO of Aston Martin, said: “Having unveiled the RapidE Concept back in October 2015 we reach another milestone with the confirmation that we are now putting the first all-electric Aston Martin into production.”

Despite embracing new technology, the engine does still have a place in Aston Martin’s future plans, with Palmer adding: “The internal combustion engine has been at the heart of Aston Martin for more than a century, and will continue to be for years to come. RapidE will showcase Aston Martin’s vision, desire and capability to successfully embrace radical change, delivering a new breed of car that stays true to our ethos and delights our customers.”

A total of 155 units of the electric saloon will be made and the project sees the continued collaboration between Aston Martin and Williams Advanced Engineering, which co-developed the RapidE concept.

Paul McNamara, technical director of Williams Advanced Engineering, said: “This project with Aston Martin will draw on the extensive battery and EV experience we have accumulated and we are extremely pleased to be supporting this prestigious British company with their future electrification strategy.”
