Thousands of UK Fords affected by global fire risk recall

Vehicles equipped with the 1.6-litre GTDI petrol engine have a risk of fire due to poor coolant circulation

Thousands of Ford vehicles have been recalled worldwide because of a risk of engine fires.

The issue relates to poor coolant circulation in the 1.6-litre GTDI petrol engine and affects 15,200 vehicles registered in the UK. This relates to C-Max, Fiesta ST, Focus, Kuga and Transit Connect models built between 2010 and 2015.

Emphasising that the risk was small, Ford UK said in a statement: “Safety is our number one priority – we want to reassure our customers that the affected vehicles remain safe to drive.

“However, customers should see their dealer if their vehicle exhibits a coolant leak or overheating, or frequently needs coolant added.

“Ford will contact customers later in the year with details on service kit availability and installation at dealers. Any action carried out on affected vehicles will be free of charge.

“We remain committed to providing our customers with safe and high-quality vehicles, addressing potential issues and responding quickly for our customers.”

Ford North America issued a recall yesterday for 230,000 vehicles in the region following “29 reports of fire associated with this issue in the United States and Canada”. It confirmed that no injuries had been reported as a result.

In the recall notice, Ford said: “In the affected vehicles, a lack of coolant circulation could cause an engine to overheat, resulting in a crack in the cylinder head. A cracked cylinder head can result in a pressurised oil leak. Oil that comes into contact with a hot engine surface increases the risk of a fire in the engine compartment.”
