'Cockroach infestation' closes Subway in Wellington

A takeaway in Telford has been temporarily closed by council officials due to an "active infestation of cockroaches".

Telford & Wrekin Council environmental health officers have served a hygiene emergency prohibition notice on Subway, in Market Square, Wellington.

A notice which has been placed in the window of the sandwich shop says the council also intends to apply for a hygiene emergency prohibition order at Telford Magistrates Court on Monday.

It says there is an "active infestation of cockroaches" at the takeaway "posing an imminent risk of injury to health".

The notice, which has been addressed to Simmerjit Sandhar as the food business operator, says if an order is made by the court the shop will remain closed "until the infestation of cockroaches is eradicated".

Nigel Newman, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "Council environmental health officers, acting on a complaint, inspected Subway in Market Square, Wellington, on Monday.

"During this inspection, they issued an immediate temporary closure notice to the business because of an active pest infestation.

"A schedule of works have been provided to the business, which will allow the business to reopen once the risk to public health has been removed."

A spokesman for Subway said: ""The store has been temporarily closed as a precaution and the owner is taking immediate steps to resolve the issue, including a thorough inspection and cleaning and disposing of all food that was not in a sealed container.

"The store's existing Food Safety Rating is five and they are a working with local health officers to resolve the issue promptly to re-establish its high standards of safety, cleanliness and quality.

"All Subway Stores are committed to the highest food quality and safety standards."
