Vicki Beeby, from Newport, has been shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists' Association's (RNA) 2021 Romantic Novel Awards. The winners of the awards will be presented by actor and presenter Larry Lamb in a digital event on Monday, March 8.

Novelist Mike Gayle will be presented with the 2021 Outstanding Achievement Award, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the field of romantic fiction.

Vicki Beeby is one of six finalists in the Romantic Saga Award category with her novel The Ops Room Girls, published by Canelo.

Vicki said: “I’m beyond thrilled to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award. I wouldn’t even have finished my first novel, let alone got a publishing deal, without the support and friendship I’ve found with the RNA, so I’m really excited and honoured.”

In the novel, after heroine Evie’s hopes of an Oxford scholarship are dashed, she joins the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Posted to a fighter station, she befriends shy May and flirty, glamorous Jess. With danger ever-present, the girls band together to overcome challenges and navigate new romances.

Evie's background is based on Vicki’s mother, who grew up in working-class Cowley and managed to get a grammar school education. Vicki has dedicated The Ops Room Girl to her mum, ‘the original Cowley girl’.
