The plans for the centre, on Stafford Road just outside Newport, also include a proposal to demolish one of the existing conservatories, extend the garden centre and add 4 car parking spaces for customers.

The new restaurant area would cover over a terrace, and would comprise 450 square metres altogether.

Applicant Chris Smith, on behalf of Growing Enterprises Limited, said: "The garden centre has accommodated an ancillary café / restaurant since its inception in March 2003.

"It is proposed to demolish the existing conservatory on the west elevation of the building, which forms part of the existing restaurant, and to erect a 450sqm extension to the building that will accommodate a replacement café/restaurant with associated servery and kitchen areas.

"The proposal is modest in scale and will not be widely visible. It will not, therefore, have an unacceptable impact on the character of the area.

"Indeed, the proposal will always be seen in the context of the existing garden centre building and its commercial neighbours and will not, therefore, represent a discordant feature."
