Hugh Jackson, from Newport, received a live donor kidney transplant from his mother last September.

Around 11 months after receiving treatment at Royal Stoke University Hospital, Hugh went on to compete in both the cycling road race and the individual trial, winning bronze in his time trial.

Hugh said: “Being involved in the games is an amazing experience. You get to speak to all those who received organs from deceased donors as well as the incredible families.

"It's good to see the real positive impact the gift of life has.

"It gives competitors the chance to demonstrate their revitalised life and celebrate that."

The British Transplant Games are an annual event, with this year’s games taking place in Birmingham earlier this month.

The event focuses on inclusivity, with entrants of all ages and abilities taking part.

Competitors are able to self-enter the event, following clearance from a medical professional.

Hugh had a vague knowledge of the games, before undergoing his transplant and treatment in 2017.

"The first time I really heard about it was in an information pack from the hospital given to me in the lead up to my transplant," he said.

Hugh also had the chance to attended the grand opening ceremony, which took place at Birmingham Symphony Hall.

He said the ceremony made him realise the real value of raising awareness for the transplant community.

"I feel there’s a duty somewhat to show off the outcome and demonstrate the value of donating organs,” he said.

The staff at Royal Stoke University Hospital said they were incredibly proud of Hugh's achievements.

Caroline Clark, transplant sister, said: “We’re all so proud of the incredible recovery Hugh has made.

"To not only taking part but winning medals in an event like this ,less than a year after receiving a transplant, is so brilliant.”

After this year's success, Hugh plans to take part in the next games, which will be held in Newport, Gwent, next summer.
