The twice Olympic gold medallist and three time world champion took part in the Newport Nocturne in 2007, and co-organiser Nick Jeggo said it was obvious he was already one to watch.

“It’s been fantastic to see Geraint win the Tour de France after meeting him and seeing him compete at the 2007 Nocturne," Nick said.

"He was a true gentleman then and he hasn’t changed a bit over the years."

Geraint is one of a long list of top cyclists who have taken part in the floodlit Nocturne, which starts in the centre of Newport.

The next event, due to take place on August 18, will feature three-time gold medallist and five-time world champion Ed Clancy for the third time.

Co-organiser Diane Jeggo said: "It’s been fantastic to see Geraint win the Tour after meeting him and seeing him compete at the 2007 Nocturne. He was a true gentleman then and he hasn’t changed a bit over the years."

The Newport Nocturne is returning in 2018 after a four-year break. It is being held in honour of former organiser and Shropshire cycling stalwart Mick Jeggo, who died in February.
