The owner offered the blades to officers in Newport over the weekend.

Constable Lee Thomas, of Newport's Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "Replica samurai swords used to be very popular in the late 1980s and 1990s but it's been illegal since 2008 to import or sell swords unless under one of very few exemptions.

"Our advice if anyone has a sword they want rid of is to contact their local police station or Safer Neighbourhood Team via the 101 number and arrange for them to be collected or dropped off.

"Do not just walk through town or take them by bus to deliver them to a police station as technically possession of a sword in a public place is a criminal offence."
