War weekend in record charity payout

Ironbridge's "war weekend" raised a record amount for a charity which supports injured servicemen and women - despite being hit by the weather.

The event was held in May centred on Dale End Park and although entry was free it raised money for the Pilgrim Bandits. The Pilgrim Bandits charity was established by a small group of Special Forces veterans in 2007 with the aim of using their unique training and experience to help and inspire injured personnel to live life to the full.

Organisers' publicity officer John Casey said: "The total made for this year's weekend was £10,066.60p. This is the highest total we've ever had for the weekend.

"Our chairman Dave Adams presented the cheque to James Taylor-Hodge of Pilgrim Bandits and Ricky Furgusson, MC, a recipient of the charity's assistance."

Corporal Ricky Furgusson, from Stirchley in Telford, was awarded the Military Cross for going to the aid of wounded soldiers injured by bombs in Afghanistan. He was himself seriously wounded by a bomb, losing both legs, an eye and fingers on both hands

The Ironbridge Second World War weekend featured a vehicle parade, a performance from Cosford Military Wives Choir, and other activities included displays by re-enactment groups.

It was held over a Saturday and a Sunday, but most of the activities on the Sunday afternoon were cancelled because of bad weather.
