Upgrades will be made across council-owned car parks, including Station Yard, The Square, The Wharfage and Dale End.

The work is being phased to ensure disruption will be kept at a minimum. There will be local traffic management used at each location and no significant impact is expected on parking provision.

Council bosses said the upgrades will improve reliability of the machines, allow the council to manage faults more effectively and also introduce card payment facilities to the car parks within the Ironbridge Gorge.

Councillor Nicola Lowery, borough councillor for the Ironbridge Gorge said: “It is great to see the parking machines replaced as this will allow visitors to pay by card to include contactless payment.

"Payment by card and contactless is something that many people have been keen to see introduced and given the increasing shift towards cashless payment methods, it is important that one of our key tourist destinations has modern facilities available.

"Having seen many people trying to find spare change in our car parks, we need to make sure we make visiting the area as convenient as possible to encourage people to come to the gorge and experience all that our fascinating World Heritage Site has to offer.”
