The funding, which will be used to renovate the play area at Donnington Lifelong Learning Centre, has been given to Telford & Wrekin Council by SUEZ Communities Trust.

The Let’s Play – Donnington Project, for children aged under 12, will see two separate play areas joined together by removing the central fence to create a larger facility.

New equipment such as a see-saw, roundabout, swings and multi-play climbing frame with slide will be installed.

The area is vital in encouraging children to engage in fun physical outdoor play activities.

SUEZ Communities Trust, formerly the SITA Trust, works closely with the Landfill Communities Fund – a tax credit scheme that encourages landfill site operators to pass on funds to community and environmental projects through approved bodies such as councils.

Councillor John Minor, Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet member for leisure, green spaces and parks, said: “This funding boost from SUEZ Communities Trust is great news, the play area is in desperate need of being brought up to date.

“The site is split into two areas so parents with more than one child are often to-ing and fro-ing between the two.

"After the upgrade, the site will become one area so parents can let their children play freely, knowing they are secure and contained with safe and stimulating equipment to play with.”

Marianne Ivin, of SUEZ Communities Trust, added: “We are excited to be part of this play area revamp and look forward to seeing the final result.

"SUEZ Communities Trust provides grants through the Landfill Communities Fund.

"This important source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided such worthy projects with more than £1.4 billion.”

The project is expected to be finished by the end of November.
