Popular community venue in Telford gets revamp
A popular community venue has been revamped in Telford – and a church will be next to get an upgrade.
Great Dawley Town Council wants to refurbish and upgrade two popular community spaces for people living in Dawley.
Thanks to Telford 50 Legacy funding, facilities at Dawley House are being upgraded.
The work includes upgrading lighting, refurbishing flooring, new blinds, a new projector and sound equipment.
It is part of a £750,000 Telford & Wrekin Council scheme, which is giving £150,000 to each of the borough’s five main towns, including Great Dawley, as part of Telford 50 celebrations.

Councillor Malcolm Randle, Mayor of Great Dawley, said: “The improvements to Dawley House funded by the Telford 50 Legacy Fund are really helping to make our centre a much more welcoming place and opening it up to a wider variety of uses – for example, as a concert venue, thanks to the new sound system installed.
“We are gradually starting to see the results of these improvements – for instance, in the increase of enquiries for birthday parties and we expect to receive many more enquiries to use our facilities for other occasions as well.
“Improving what we have here to increase rental and usage will help us sustain the centre and continue to support our community long into the future – this is a true legacy of Telford 50."
Work is also planned at St Leonard’s Church to accommodate a wider variety of community needs and to give the venue a more modern look.
It will include repairs to the walls, window seats, updating interior décor and much more.
Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council's deputy leader and cabinet member for communities, housing and enforcement said: "The refurbishment or purchase of community buildings and facilities is one of the key themes people have told us they wanted the Telford 50 legacy funding to support.
“In addition to £240,000 worth of small buildings grants to community groups all across the borough, we’ve been working with the town councils for the regeneration of key buildings in local areas.
“Dawley House and St Leonard’s Church are great examples of how upgrades and refurbishments by the Telford 50 Legacy grant impact on the buildings’ use, helping to preserve them as key places for community activities.”
The £2 million Telford 50 Legacy Fund supports a mix of physical schemes as well as other projects that help tackle key social issues in the borough and reduce demand on council services.
