Strategy seeks to improve care for people with learning disabilities in Telford

Residents are being encouraged to take part in a consultation on the future care of adults with learning disabilities in Telford.

The discussion asks people to share views and examples on what more can be done for people with a learning disability in Telford & Wrekin to live well and enjoy a full life, as independently as possible.

The feedback, which can be submitted until April 29, will help finalise a borough-wide draft five-year strategy for adults with a learning disability.

The strategy has been developed by the council and its partners following extensive engagement activities at the end of last year – through virtual sessions and online questionnaires – with more than 160 different people.

This includes people with learning disabilities and their families as well as carers, advocates and staff from various organisations supporting people with learning disabilities.

Councillor Andy Burford, cabinet member for health and social care, said: “We are proud that there is good support for people with a learning disability in Telford & Wrekin, but we know there are many things that could be better.

“We want to make these improvements over the next years and we are asking people for their views on these.

“We already had many responses but with three more weeks until the consultation ends, we want to gather as much feedback as possible – to make sure that our plan does make a positive difference for adults with a learning disability, their families and carers.

“It’s very easy to do so, you can either fill in a short questionnaire and/or attend one of our friendly virtual sessions in April.”
