The Thomas Botfield, near Telford Shopping Centre, will be closed for a week while the work, which has already started, is finished.

The pub will close on Sunday for work before reopening on August 19.

The work will include redecoration and the refurbishment of fixed seating, furniture and carpet.

Eddie Gershon, a spokesman for Wetherspoon, said: “The Thomas Botfield is an extremely popular pub.

“We want to ensure that we offer our customers the best possible pub and therefore we are carrying out this work to upgrade the pub.”

The pub, in Central Square, was named after Thomas Botfield who came from Dawley man and built the Old Park Ironworks and built homes for his workers in Old Park, as well as the village of Dark Lane.

He was among those criticised for reducing workers’ pay during the Cinderloo Uprising in 1821.

The following march saw a number of protesters killed.
