It’s an egg-citing time for Telford’s Exotic Zoo, after the birth of a new generation of its rarest species.

Four new Fiji Banded Iguanas have hatched at the zoo in Priorslee, and people will be able to see them when it repoens next month.

Owner Scott Adams said: “It’s our most endangered species – managing to breed them is an amazing thing for the zoo.

“When they laid their eggs, we wanted to make sure we had the best chance of getting them to hatch. We’ve had them in a special incubator keeping them at the perfect temperature.

“The whole time they’re in there, it’s very uncertain. You never know, especially since they’re the first eggs they’ve laid. It’s a waiting game. When you see the first head pop through, it’s very exciting.”

The iguanas, which separate from their parents very early on in the wild, have been put in a different enclosure.

In the long term Scott said the baby iguanas might be sent to other zoos for their collections.

The zoo reopens on February 16.
