Friends race to support Sam

Family and friends of a diabetic schoolboy have put on their running shoes to raise more than £1,000 for a children's charity.

Sam Meredith, seven, of St Matthew's CE Primary School, has type one diabetes and gets help from Junior Diabetic Research Foundation which supports patients and families.

Earlier this month the 14-strong group Sam's Team limbered up to run in the Telford 10k race and they raised the cash by attracting donations in the community.

They also held a collection at the event held in the town park.

Their efforts have so far raised £1,003.46.

Sam's mother Deborah Meredith, of Donnington, says: "The foundation has been a big help to us and to another child who attends the same school, so we thought this would be a good to way to both raise funds for a little known charity and raise its profile in the community.

"They supply equipment, for example, Sam was recently given an insulin pump to make it a bit more comfortable for him to take his medication. And they provide support for the families of the patients."

Diagnosed

The youngster was diagnosed with the condition 12 months ago and has regular insulin injections to control it.

His school friend Molly Bowyer, six, and her brother Charlie, 11, also have the same condition and the families support each other.

"St Matthew's School have been an amazing support and both Sam and Molly have a one to one teaching assistant who looks after them at school. Molly and Charlie were both diagnosed, aged one, and Sam was diagnosed last year after he had just turned six." Mrs Meredith added.
