The A442 Eastern Primary, known locally as the EP, reopened before 5am, despite concerns that it could take longer.

The road closed last week so that the town's new £10 million footbridge could be lifted into place.

And although the lift had to be delayed a day because of high winds on Sunday morning, workers still managed to re-open the road on time this morning.

The council tweeted: "The A442 is now open!

"A big thanks to our contractors who worked through the night to open the road in both directions before 5am this morning."

The lift of the 230-tonne bridge was delayed onto Monday morning, being put into place at about 5am.

The lift had been scheduled for Saturday night but the operation was cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.

The new bridge will now require further finishing engineering works before it can be used and is expected to open fully to the public in November.
