£900,000 sewer plan to stop flooding near Telford

Work on "crucial" new £900,000 sewers will stop flooding and a bad smell in a village near, says a councillor.

Part of Wellington Road, in Muxton, will be shut until August for the project to be completed by Severn Trent Water.

The scheme will involve new drains being laid on land between Wellington Road and School Road, using a specialist underground drill.

The work is being carried out following years of complaints of about bad smells in hot weather and flash floods after heavy rainfall in the area.

Muxton ward representative Councillor Nigel Dugmore said: "Work to lay the new sewer pipes isn't only about flooding, but it's quite well known locally that there is periodically in Wellington Road a sewer smell.

"Some work was carried out down at the pumping station a couple of years ago that they thought would alleviate the problem and it didn't.

"The sewerage backs up near the shops and when you drive pass you can smell it.

"It is an ongoing issue and I would imagine that with more housing getting built in the area the sewer system as it is, won't be sufficient to cope.

"I haven't noticed the smell lately, but it does affect the residents particularly in summer."

In 2014 roads were flooded in several communities including Muxton, Wrockwardine Wood, Ketley Bank, Wellington and Bridgnorth.

Severn Trent Water spokeswoman Ria Gaffney said: "We’ve invested nearly £900,000 to install a new sewer which will help protect homes from flooding as the village experiences flooding during heavy rainfall, this work will help during sudden downpours. We’re also using an underground drilling technique, which will help minimise disruption.

"We’re really sorry if this work causes any inconvenience, but this is a crucial project for Muxton which will see homes protected from flooding."

The preparation work started on March 5.

From this week Arriva buses' number five service was being diverted from Wellington Road, which is shut at its junction with the A4640 Donnington Wood Way and The Whitehouse Hotel, affecting passengers using stops at the Old Post Office and Breton Park.

The diversion route will see the bus service use Marshbrook Way, Saltwells Drive, Muxton Lane, Fieldhouse Drive, Donnington Wood Way and School Road.

Meanwhile the village's next Police and communities together meeting will be at St John’s Church, Saltwell’s Drive, on April 18 at 7pm.

Residents are invited to attend and discuss any issues that are affecting their quality of life with representatives from the local policing team and the parish council.
