About 70 litres of fuel spilled on the A442 Queensway between Randlay and Stirchley following the collision which happened at 4.55am yesterday.

A police car that was in the vicinity also suffered a punctured tyre after it was driven over the same object.

Crew Manager Simon Morris, of Telford Central Fire Station, said: "It's unclear where the debris came from. It may have fallen off a passing lorry.

"It was a large amount of petrol that leaked and the gentleman in the car was annoyed, but unhurt.

"We used special pads to absorb the fuel from the carriageway and to prevent it from flowing into the watercourse."

A recovery team from Telford & Wrekin council also attended the scene.
